Less than a month ago, our wonderful caregiver/housekeeper Vanessa, admitted her son Ansel, 2.5 years old, to Sick Kids with an on and off fever that would not break.
As per the direction of his DR, Vanessa had been treating Ansel with ibuprofen - seeing no immediate change, along with the sudden onset of hip pain, she checked into emergency.
24 hrs later Vanessa received the news that Ansel had been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer that occurs most often in infants and young children called Neuroblastoma.
The Doctors explained that they see about 10-20 patients a year with this type of cancer; however, the aggressive and fast growing nature of Ansel’s tumour was something they had never seen before.
The tumour was found near his kidney and in a very short period of time has spread throughout his body, bones and bone marrow.
Treating neuroblastoma is complex.
Ansel has already started an intensive treatment plan of chemotherapy and radiation that will be followed by surgery (to remove the tumour), amongst other procedures.
Vanessa will be spending the next 12-18 months (at minimum), looking after Ansel, managing his treatment plan, intensive chemo and ongoing appointments.
We have started this GoFundMe to help ease the enormous financial strain and incomprehensible burden ahead of Vanessa and her family.
