My name is Scott, I’m a retired firefighter who was injured in the line of duty. I’ve had two major back surgeries, a spinal cord stimulator implanted and a total knee replacement before 50. Actually it all started at 40. I’m looking at a third spinal fusion. Praying this is my last one, I’m not going to have any income, because I’m out of time at my job, and not sure how long I’ll be out for if I’m able to return at all.
Most of my work is teaching, but I teach automotive and electrical for a small private Christian school. Crawling in around vehicles and buses is really taxing physically. When I asked for the position, I knew there was a chance it would be tough, but I needed something to do and thought I’d just push through it.
Well here I am looking at this surgery and not sure where to go now. I’m going against every bit of my self and pride and asking for help. Hopefully get us through this surgery and a couple months just in case I can’t return. I’ll look at that when it comes. Thank you for even considering this and reading through. If you’ve any friends or family who might wish to donate please pass this along. I’ve applied for SSDI three times with a lawyer on the last one and was told I met the criteria and certainly shouldn’t be working, but because I was 49 and not 50 I’m lumped into the 19-49 category. Meaning I’m evaluated at the same level as a 19 year old. Because I have a college degree (emergency management, firefighting, and Paramedic) I should be able to find a job… well when you can’t stand, sit, or move very long, most of those options are out. Not to mention my disability states I’ve met MMI, ( maximum medical
improvement) and can no longer perform those functions. The injury and disease is worsening over time. Opioids and Gabapentin, with muscle relaxers are my be only chance of being in less pain, if you’ve ever taken those you realize you can’t work well while taking them and probably shouldn’t be under heavy machinery and cars etc. I’ve done what I could until now, and my body has said enough. I’m looking to get by for a few months and cover the medical bills until I figure out what to do next. I just ask that you would prayerfully consider helping me and my family until a miracle comes doing. Thank you and God Bless!!
