Ann's ALS Battle: Need for Medical Funds

Donation protected
In 2023, my mom, Ann Arena was diagnosed with ALS, a terminal and untreatable illness. My mom is currently paralyzed in both of her arms, leaving her unable to do even the most basic tasks like feeding and washing herself.

My teenage brother is our mom's official caretaker, which is a huge job for someone so young. I'm unable to take the position myself because I am her social security rep. He is doing a great job, but we have still been unable to keep up with the tasks and finances required to keep her safe and healthy. These include:
  • navigating the UPMC healthcare system to ensure she has accommodations such as a stair lift, safe entrance/ egress, use of a commode, a head-controlled wheelchair, etc + training in how to safely use these accessibility devices.
  • paying for physical therapies and other doctors visits (up to $200 per visit)
  • seeing doctors outside of network to look for diagnosis beyond ASL (more context below, but my mom has consistently been denied coverage from doctors who have stated they disagree with the diagnosis.)
  • Taking care of my teenage brother

Years ago I had enough money that I was able to buy my mom a house in Pittsburgh so she and my little brother could be closer to me, but I have since drained my saving on medical expenses and have not been able to work consistently in years, as taking care of my mom and organizing her healthcare is a full time job.

I have hesitated to ask for help, as there are so many in need, but I fear for my mom’s and my own well being if we cannot find more stability soon. So thank you for your donations, they are deeply appreciated.

love,
Jahlise

ps: while the help we need is immediate and for basic care, we have also been on a horrible journey to do with what I believe is this faulty ALS diagnosis. My mom’s decline in health started with a neck injury, followed by a spinal surgery, then a revision to that surgery. I believe there was nerve damage done while in surgery which left her paralyzed. ALS is a terminal diagnosis, and it is one given only by ruling out other possibilities. My mom, however, has been denied coverage from doctors who have offered solutions, had documents removed from her file if a health professional notes a disagreement with the diagnosis, and so much more that I will link below if you care to look.

The funds we need are immediate, but the whole experience has been incredibly opaque and disturbing alongside the grief of watching my mom suffer.
