Update 1/28 11am: Anne has been moved out of the ICU to the neurology unit, which is incredibly promising. She's been responding to commands like "wave" and was even able to walk with assistance. We can't believe how quickly this all came through, and we're astounded by everyone's generosity — truly, we can't say enough to let you know how grateful and amazed we all are.

Update 1/26 8pm: SHE IS OUT OF HER COMA!!! News literally just came from the doctor. She's only half-awake and is responding to sounds and is moving her arms, and was able to walk with assistance. She's not speaking yet, but this is a total 180 from what was initially expected and we are so thankful. We'll keep everyone updated.

On January 22, Anne posted a photo of a moody sunset by the sea on Instagram, captioning it: "The Pacific! Feels closer to home."
She was in Oregon, yearning for open air and sunshine after almost a year of living in close quarters in New York City, spending late nights on podcast edits with a warmed-over mug of coffee by her side. So she headed west and rented an apartment by the sea. It was a spontaneous trip, and no one was surprised. She was always going off somewhere, making friends with backpackers in Chile and riding dog sleds in Norway, chasing the northern lights.
Hours after posting that sunset photo, Anne got into a rental car, planning to drive to Bend, Oregon. She left cold New York only to face a sudden winter storm in the west coast. Her car slid on the icy road and crashed head-on into an SUV driving in the opposite direction; the passengers in the other car were able to walk away from the scene, but she did not.
Anne was brought to the St. Charles hospital in Bend, where she is receiving critical care in the ICU. Police officers at the scene said it was a miracle she made it out alive; doctors said it could take weeks for her to wake up from her coma, and long months of hospitalization and therapy after.
So yes: she’s in a coma, albeit a shallow one. Anne can recognize and respond to familiar voices, and stirs when prompted. We won’t know the extent of the brain damage until she wakes up from her coma. Friends and co-workers have sent dozens of videos, hoping that each one brings her slightly closer to full consciousness.
Her parents will be flying from Manila to Oregon and from there, will decide where Anne can fully recover — hopefully closer to the home she built for herself in the east coast.
Thankfully, Anne’s employers have been nothing but wonderful and committed to her health, and we know Anne will be cared for in the coming months. But healthcare is expensive, and anyone who’s ever had a medical emergency knows to expect the unexpected. While her family is confident that her healthcare will be covered, there are other expenses that insurance just doesn't do. Her parents will be spending the coming months at her side, and we want to make sure they have nothing to worry about as they focus on helping Anne recuperate.
This fundraiser is to ensure that things like groceries, internet, and Airbnb rent will be covered, as well as other small things like Uber fare and winter clothes if her family needs them. We’ve heard from so many people who love Anne asking how they can help: the truth is, there are so many things we probably haven’t anticipated yet, and instead of flowers and cards, a fund for unexpected emergencies is what we need at the moment.
Any amount goes a long way, and if you’re not in a place to chip in, a video that could help bring Anne — journalist, writer, avid fan of The X-Files — to consciousness will be much appreciated. We also ask for any prayers you can direct for Anne’s continued recovery and for her family.
