Annalise was diagnosed in utero at 20 weeks with hydrocephalus. We welcomed our baby girl into the world on January 6th at 35 weeks. She had a shunt placed at only 3 days old on the 9th and spent 20 days in the NICU before coming home on January 26th. After being home for only 8 days she was admitted back into the hospital on February 3rd for 4 more days then released for 3 days and now back to being admitted since February 10th.
Annalise has had three shunt taps done which all came back with finding blood in her ventricles, which is not good. She had to have her first shunt removed on Thursday, February 11th because of it being infected from a bacterial infection, meningitis. This infection is in her brain which led to her needing the external drain she currently has to clear up the infection. She is also currently having seizures which they believe is being caused by the meningitis, so they have placed her on a ventilator to assist in her breathing and is getting her nutrients from a feeding tube.
We have currently been staying at a hotel that is about 20 minutes away from the hospital to rest up and take care of ourselves so we can help take care of her when we are with her. The Ronald McDonald house is not an option for us since we do need to make trips home during the week. We have animals that we do need to check up on along with other general household items.
We want and need to be with our daughter who needs our love and care as she is going through her journey.
Thank You,
The Strasel Family
