Hello!
I'm Calvin Ye, a founding history teacher and 12th grade advisor at East Bay Innovation Academy (EBIA). EBIA is a public charter school that has been serving students in the greater Oakland area since 2014. We provide students with a rigorous college preparatory STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) program that focuses on personalized instruction through the use of technology and project-based learning. This year, we will graduate our very first class of Seniors in May 2020!
Our seniors and their founding family members have shown incredible support, patience, and resilience. Throughout these past 4 years, we have experienced some transitions along the way as we continued to develop and improve our systems to better serve our students. Our students and parents have actively collaborated with the staff to create a school culture that is warm, welcoming, and supportive.
I still remember my first interactions and conversations with our school’s cafeteria on their first day of school. My greatest memory is introducing myself to a set of twin siblings, one wearing a Cubs’ Kris Bryant jersey, while the other wearing an Angels’ Mike Trout jersey. I can’t believe that was 4 years ago!
Our students have inspired me and shown me so much of their creativity and talents in the few years that I have been with them. A couple of students have partnered together this year to start their own photography business. They are the first people that I go to if I have any questions related to my laptop and any random tech issues. They work hard and are not afraid to take on academic challenges. I will also never forget our time reviewing AP World History materials together on Saturday mornings in preparation for their exams. Some even brought donuts for the group as they quizzed each other on their AP flash cards.
They have also helped me improve as an educator by giving me accurate and supportive feedback on how to improve the sequence of my assignments and class projects. They are smart, kind, and thoughtful. I am very proud of them and they truly deserve to be celebrated. They are a very diverse group, wise beyond their years, and full of so much heart, grit, and determination. Nothing in the world can match the experience I have had here with them. They’ve let me in on their personal hopes and dreams, and I’m honored to be their 12th grade advisor.
To celebrate their academic success, we would like to give our seniors a banquet and a free night out at an amusement park in a fun and safe environment. The students will enjoy a night out for dinner at their senior banquet and have one final group outing on their last day of high school. They will board buses to Great America Park for a memorable day of rides and entertainment and given money for the arcade, food, and drink.
Our parent community is reaching out to their friends and family to fundraise $14,000. Here’s how the money will be spent:
· Senior Banquet night ($7,000) – Held at a local restaurant, the seniors will have an opportunity to share memories and bond with one another while breaking bread.
· Grad Night ($7,000) – Our seniors are planning a fun night out at Great America. Your contribution will help pay for bus rental and entry fees.
Any amount that you can contribute ($5, $10, $25, or more) to this GoFundMe for these well deserving seniors will be greatly appreciated! I know that one day when they are in a position to help others, they will think about this experience and pay it forward. I sincerely believe even the tiniest act of genuine kindness has the potential to create a ripple effect that can turn into a wave. These kids are our future and I am so excited to see what they go on to do!
Many thanks in advance for your support and sponsorship and for providing a memorable event for our seniors. Every donation, no matter how much, is appreciated!
Sincerely,
Calvin Ye
