Aniya and Riya Smith

Aloha, my name is Sheila. I am starting this fundraiser for my niece, Kyra, her boyfriend Malik, and their twin baby girls Aniya and Riya.

Earlier this year Malik and Kyra found out that they were expecting. They were surprised and overjoyed to find out that it was an identical twin pregnancy. Their baby girls had the expected due date of December 26th.

On September 5th Kyra’s water broke at 24 weeks of pregnancy. Kyra and Malik went to Waimea ER and then immediately flown to Kapiolani Hospital for Women and Children. Upon her arrival, they determined that they would keep her at Kapiolani to help keep the babies in for as long as possible.

While staying at the hospital, Malik and Debby would also take turns flying back and forth every week from Kona to keep her company.

On September 30th, Kyra started having contractions that the hospital team could not stop. She was immediately rushed into the operating room for emergency C-section. Aniya was born weighing 2lbs 4.5oz and Riya followed weighing 2lbs 8.4oz. They were only 27 1/2 weeks gestation.

Everything seemed fine as the delivery was successful. The twins were to stay in the NICU until growth requirements were met for release. On Oct. 10th, Riya began having complications with her digestive system.

Riya Mahealani Kalehuamakanoekauka'iu passed away on Oct. 11.

Aniya will remain in the NICU while she fights through her own health challenges.

If you are able, the Calbero/Smith families would greatly appreciate any donations to help alleviate mounting medical expenses as well as travel expenses for Malik. Malik has continued traveling back and forth from Kona to Honolulu to be with Kyra and Aniya.
