Hi family and friends!
I'll be traveling to Ecuador through GWU, along with some other awesome nursing friends! We will participate in providing health services and health education programs for adults and children in community health clinics, schools, and the community. A major focus of our work is to provide health promotion and disease prevention education to the people of Quito and local communities.
Global health is a topic of great interest! I've always been compelled towards service, both domestic and international outreach, and hope to implement volunteering and missions in my future career. This is a full immersion trip where we'll be living with a host family during our stay to truly embrace the language, lifestyle and culture. Serving as community health nurses, we will be learning about global health first-hand, cultural competence and awareness, adaptability, and holistic care, hoping to gain more insight and wisdom to become better nurses!
I am currently in my last semester of nursing school (YAY) and its been unbelievable to see how far I've come. My perspective of nursing has definitely shifted after working with different populations from older adults to mothers giving birth to pediatric oncology patients. I decided to choose nursing through the compassion I witnessed nurses provide for my mom during her hospital stays. To show others that same compassion is the heart of my endeavors and my desire to try to become a great nurse.
Throughout it all, so many of you have been extremely motivating and encouraging through kind words and gestures. Thank you thank you for your continued support!
