Animal Rescue Transport Vehicle

Tax deductible
Want to join me in making a difference? I'm raising money to benefit Crossing Guardians' primary transporter and special foster mama, Hilda. Any donation towards the purchase of a used vehicle for Hilda to use doing rescue work will help tremendously. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.

More information about Hilda:  Hilda is Crossing Guardians' primary transporter. We have come to rely on her to pick up animals in distress, take our rescued animals to their vet appointments, pick up and deliver medications, food and supplies to our fosters, and many other things associated with animal rescue.

Here’s the situation. Hilda rents the car she uses to transport dogs and other animal rescue-related "stuff." I never knew her car was a rental. She pays the owner $600 a month, in addition to maintaining it, and paying for any damages. Someone rear-ended her the other day, and the guy who hit her took off.

Hilda has made miracles happen in the rescue community. I have worked with her for years. I've called her at 2 or 3 in the morning to get a dog who was just hit by a car, or very ill, and she doesn't hesitate to oblige. Remember Meggie? Meggie actually had an owner, but they didn’t care about her. She was drooling blood from her mouth and they did nothing. Well, I wanted to rescue her, so I called Hilda. In the dark of night, Hilda scaled the owner’s fence to get her for me.

Remember the 4 Weims whose owner was starving to death because he didn’t want them anymore? Well, if you recall, the owner found out that the rescue community was trying to rescue them, so he hid them. A Weim rescue called upon Hilda to get them. It was not an easy task, but she got them — again in the dark of night. If only she took videos of the harrowing lengths to which she has gone to save an animal in need. If only….

But, you will never know that about her, or about many of the other things she does in the rescue community. She’s quiet, humble and never complains. Actually, I wouldn't even know about her predicament had I not pressed her about it.

If think that's all she does for animals, you'd be wrong. She walks the streets and feeds stray dogs and volunteers at spay/neuter events. She works from sun-up to very late in the evening. In fact, as I type this, she is making a nearly 2-hour trek to Ensenada to pick up a sick dog.

The featured dog in the photo is Aaron. Homeless, he was starving to death and suffering from a myriad of other diseases. His first foster lived about an hour away from the vet we use. I asked Hilda to deliver bags of dog food to the foster. When she arrived, she informed me that Aaron's stitches after being neutered were never removed (even though I was assured that they were). Hilda said, "That's okay. I will remove. I know how. I do all the time." Aaron is a pit bull who didn't know Hilda. Didn't matter. Hilda went right to work and removed his stitches. What did Aaron do? Nothing, even though he wasn't restrained. What has Aaron done since that time? Become very attached to Hilda. She kept him. If it were anyone other than Hilda or our organization's other two fosters, we would not agree. Hilda is a responsible pet parent.

I tell you this story because Aaron is featured in this fundraising campaign's collage. The car Hilda is currently renting is in the photo on the upper, right-hand side.

Your assistance is much-needed to help in our continued efforts to save animals in an entirely different country, as well as help someone I have come to respect as a compassionate person with a huge soft spot for animals.

More information about Crossing Guardians: Crossing Guardians is a nonprofit animal rescue and charitable organization whose purpose is to save and improve the lives of abused, neglected and homeless animals suffering and struggling to survive along the US-MX border. We provide assistance with rescuing, vetting, transporting, fostering and placing homeless animals who roam aimlessly along the US-MX border, with an emphasis on the greater Tijuana area.

The plight of homeless animals – abuse, neglect, homelessness, starvation, injury, illness and disease, loneliness and despair – does not exist in a vacuum. It is brought about by the underlying impoverished conditions and culture of the community. It is a viciously cruel cycle.

Our efforts to help animals will exemplify kindness and compassion. We can show that there is hope for the weakest; help for the most at risk. Bearing witness to mercy can change hearts and open eyes to the possibility of making a difference for the betterment of animal-kind.
