A dedicated crew of caretakers risked their lives to stay with the dolphins to ensure their safety through the storm. All humans and dolphins survived Irma without injury, but now they face more challenges.
Almost all the dolphins' food (frozen fish) and the freezers which house it were destroyed, along with the power generator. Without proper refrigeration, the food could make the dolphins sick. Dolphins get all of their nutrition and some of their hydration from their food, so without it they are at increased risk of dehydration. They can be given additional fresh water, but, currently, the water is potentially unsafe, when it works at all. Dolphins Plus Marine Mammal Responder has lost their entire veterinarian lab with many drugs and equipment that the animals need to keep their medical health.
