Hi, My name is Joan Orr. I'm from Canada and I have worked in the international humane education community for many years. The most significant and profound difference I have been able to make in this field is in helping the Liberia Animal Welfare and Conservation Society to raise funds and promote their work. LAWCS has won several award for its work. Its founder Morris Darbo is an internationally recognized leader is the field of humane education. Morris' goal is to change the culture of his country so that people treat each other and animals with kindness.
Among the many significant achievements of LAWCS are:
- Educating tens of thousands of children about compassionate care of animals through school Kindness Clubs, classroom presentation and community events
- Award-winning rabies prevention through education and vaccination clinics
- Increasing capacity for veterinary care through university education programs (there are no veterinarians in Liberia!)
- Free veterinary clinics in partnership with Vets Without Borders
- Collaboration with Humane Society International to provide community education about animal care and kindess
- Developing programs to promote care and kindess for working animals
- Vegan food program in local schools and community gardens to grow healthy food
- Education campaigns focussed on preventing pet-eating, preventing the harveting of monkeys for meat, preventing the capture and sale of wild parrots
- Rescuing and rehabilitating injured animals
LAWCS is funded wholly through donations and some grants from Humane Society International and other organizations. LAWCS relies on small donations from individual donors. All donations got directly to LAWCS. I help them by accepting donations and sending them on Morris in Liberia. It's a challenge to send money to Liberia, so I collect it and pass 100% of it on as a service to the wonderful people who work and volunteer for LAWCS.
