HELLO!

I am so honoured that you're here. Lemme tell you a little more about the EP and please feel free to ask questions.

WHAT - My debut solo EP titled 'The Old Me'

These 4 songs share glimpses into a wild ride of emotions - from the loss of my Mum to cancer, the depression and hard times of my Dad, the magic of being in love and the consistent death/ re-birth of self evolution. Moving these songs from my body to the world means I can share my heart with the hopes of connecting the threads between all of us.

Life has been huge over the past few years, so I feel like it’s appropriate to fill you all in on where these songs have grown from.

Happy To See You

In 2018 my brother and I fought against the hospital’s decision to place our mother in an old folks home for her last days and became our Mum’s palliative carers at home. We sadly lost Mum to brain cancer a few months later but her passing was profound and beautiful, surrounded by family in her own home. After a visit from Mum in my dreams, I wrote ‘Happy To See You’ on Mothers Day, a love letter to her remembering all of the special things that made her my Mum.

Dad’s Song

This song is inspired by the moment my Dad opened up to me about the struggles he had been facing silently on his own for many years. The moment he let me see beyond the super hero curtain of ‘Dad’ and into the isolating heaviness that can coexist within so many of us. I felt so honoured to hear him speak so honestly and vulnerably and I am beyond grateful for how our relationship has strengthened as a result. He is, and always will be my favourite super hero.

Loved By You

A classic duet and love song about my beautiful wife and the way it feels to know that I’ve found my forever person. It describes our most perfect moments, avo on toast, dance offs, sleep ins and making Al listen to my dreams of crazy alien invasions and clouds made of cheese every morning. Our second best collaboration yet! Our son Raffy of course takes the cake here (and at every opportunity where cake is an option). I hope you slow dance in the kitchen with your loved one to this song at the end of the day, squeezing in a moment of love in amongst the everyday chaos.

The Old Me

I found myself in the rinse repeat cycle of life’s washing machine, stuck in patterns that weren’t serving me and ending up back where I started. It was frustrating me to no end, feeling slave to my fears and unable to find a new path forward. I wrote these verses to hold myself accountable and time stamp the shedding of that particular skin. However, in the many skins I’ve shed since then I have found this song to be exactly what I’ve needed to hear.

And my hope is that these songs sit beside you if you need to hear them too.

I know that these songs only represent a slither of the challenges we all go through but writing songs seems to be a great way to sift through the emotional files and get them out on the table. A way that we can all come together to see and hear one another and I think ultimately that’s what music is about - community.

And whether that be riding a wave of deep grief in a quiet moment or silly dancing in joy and happiness with family and friends, its an opportunity to really feel something.

So, honestly I’m asking for your help to financially get these songs recorded and into the world.

WHO - I have some absolutely incredible musicians and friends collaborating on this record.
Here are some of them so far:

Paul Ruske - Piano, production
Alana Wilkinson - co-writer, co production, harmonies
Bobby Alu - Drums
Xander Theofanis - Bass
Kyle Lionhart - Guitar
Stewart Wilkinson - Hammond

WHERE- I will be recording this at 'The Music Farm' in the Byron Bay hinterland and at Paul's studio 'Tree house studios' in Mullumbimby. The Music Farm is a a magical studio that has been preserved and restored from use int he 60's/70's. Its a studio that id full of amazing vintage equipment where some of Australia's greats have recorded. ACDC actually recorded 'Back In Black' through the Neve desk so hopefully some of their magic will travel through the circuitry.

I am recording with the ridiculously talented Paul Ruske, who since recording Alana’s album has become one of our most loved and cherished friends. He’s part of our family and I’m over the moon to have his love, warmth and genuine care woven into this musical tapestry. He sings, he plays piano and his production/engineering wizardry is incredible. All of my songs are co-written with Alana Wilkinson who I’ve asked to co-produce alongside Paul. It goes without saying that Alana’s glorious brain and inescapable sunshine will fill these songs to the brim.

The amazing Bobby Alu is playing drums on the EP. He’s got his own ripper solo project but has also played with John Butler and Xavier Rudd (two of my biggest influences) and I’m flippin' honoured to have him a part of it.

Xander Theofanis, bestie and lord bass slapping legend who played bass in Jack The fox is flying in to sprinkle his magic on these songs too.

The one and only Kyle Lionhart is lending his beautiful acoustic guitar playing to the record. If you know Kyle you’ll already be feeling how great this will be!

And to really make it a real family affair, I’ve asked Alana’s dad Stewart Wilkinson to play some Hammond. Stewart plays keys like he was born inside a piano and currently works his magic with the likes of Glenn Shorrock and Ross Wilson so it’s easy to say we are in safe pianist hands.

The costings look like -

$1500 - Musicians
$750 - One day tracking at the Music Farm studio in Byron
$9400 - Preproduction, Production, Mixing at Treehouse Studios

And this is all before I engage distribution and publicity which generally ends up around the same amount as what you spend on the recording process. I’m in the process of getting quotes for the release strategy to make sure these songs have the best opportunity to be heard and shared around the globe.

If you would like to donate, anything from a sausage roll to some money to get the gears working, I would be forever grateful.

So much love from the bottom of my heart.

Angus xx
