Angie's Trip to Peru!
Hi Everyone!
I am a rising senior at Santa Clara University studying Environmental Studies and English. I have loved my time here at SCU so far and have been able to participate in amazing programs. I am part of the LEAD Scholars Program (for first generation college students), I am a student ambassador (give tours and panels to prospective families), I am on the Women's Rowing Team (Division 1), and I have gone on an immersion program to Mexico.
I found The Green Program through Santa Clara and one of the emails that I received from the Environmental Studies department. The program stood out to me because I wasn't able to do the traditional study abroad experience for a full semester due to athletics. The Green Program allows students to spend 10 days in a different country taking classes and learning about specific environmental issues.
This summer I am heading to Peru on a 10 day trip through The Green Program, a program that will explore water resource management and sustainable practices. My trip starts in August and I will be heading to Cusco, Peru. On this trip I will be gaining course credits, visiting the local culture and communities, and taking day trips throughout the country. I will be taking a water consumption class, looking into sustainable energy in Peru, and take a tour of the country's hydroelectric facility.
Through the program, I will also be able to work on a capstone project that I might be able to continue working on as a senior during the school year. Some of the previous projects have been developing a solar powered car, a proposal for the largest wind energy farm in rural Africa, a company that turns restaurant grease into bio-fuel, and a program that brings volunteers to Peru to help build wind turbines. These are just some of the projects that have been executed on these trips and I am so excited to take part in research like this.
I am looking forward to this trip and the opportunity to meet Environmental Science students from around the country from different universities while visiting a country that I have so much to learn from. Unfortunately, my university cannot cover any of the costs that are associated with the trip and abroad trips are very expensive so I am looking for help from my family and friends.
Any donation will help me along this journey and I am hoping to make the cost of the trip less daunting. Please consider donating to my trip and I can't wait to let you all know how it goes! Feel free to share with anyone else who might be interested in donating!
Thank you!
