Hello, my name is Nicole, and this is Angel's Leap of Faith. Let me begin by saying thank you for taking the time to read our story. Angel is a unique 6-year-old boy diagnosed with Autism at 18 months old, and it's been a rollercoaster from the start. Services in Central Florida, specifically Kissimmee, aren't the easiest to find. I had to do everything I could, even if it required me to drive to downtown Orlando multiple times a week for his speech and occupational therapy. Angel has always been a strong-willed boy. In general, his parents have strong personalities, so I never thought much about his tantrums until they started to turn into uncontrollable meltdowns by the age of 3, resulting in me desperately trying to find ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) services in my area. Before his 4th birthday in 2019, he was accepted into an ABA program that started working hand in hand with him at school and during school breaks at home. Honestly, I have not seen much change since he began ABA. Right now in these times for me to look for a different company in my area that works with his schedule and mine also, knowing that most waitlists are over a year-long is just something we can consider. To make a long story much shorter, Angel has been exhibiting impulsive self-injurious behaviors that have gotten out of control. On February 6th, 2022, I had to take him to the emergency room for wounds caused by him bashing his head into his bedroom window. Calling the police and rushing him to the hospital when the medical team examined him, three male doctors held him down to clean all the blood off his body, including me. They were shocked to find he only had a few aberrations when the glass should have severely hurt him. One doctor commented on Angel's strength, saying he has never had to use all of his strength to hold a child down like the way he did with Angel calling him baby Hulk just felt right. God is good, covering Angel the way he did. In addition, just two short weeks ago, someone called the police and firefighters to get him out of Walmart because of his intense self-injurious behaviors during a meltdown. I have officially exhausted all of my options here in Florida. He has seen all types of doctors, developmental pediatricians, neurologists and he's now on his third psychiatrist. We are on his 8th try of medications. He's had medications ranging from anxiety, mood stabilizers, and schizophrenic medication and so on. I need consistent help. The social worker at the hospital told me that I need to consider moving up north to find him the help he needs because Florida doesn't have the resources for a child as intense as Angel, and as his mother, I already have everything in place that the state has to offer me. I'm in urgent need of help, and my hands are tied here. I'm a mother tired of screaming for services for my son, and no one is listening here. I'm scared that one more wrong hit and I might lose him forever. I need the best services in an intensive care facility where a team of clinicians can monitor his behaviors in a controlled environment to work on medication management etc. I will be going up north this March and driving out to Maryland, where I believe I have found that specific place. The type of institute that I have been looking for. As you can imagine moving to a new state as a single mother with a child with these specific kinds of needs will be difficult, and as they say, it takes a village. We would be starting our lives from zero, so every penny, nickel, dime, quarter and dollar counts right now. I appreciate every one of you for taking the time to read our story and share it with everyone you know. God Bless. - Nicole & Angel <3
