At just 9 weeks old, their daughter Mila was diagnosed with a rare vascular condition called Fibromuscular Dysplasia. This condition causes abnormal cell growth in her arteries, reducing blood flow and function to both of her kidneys. The decreased blood flow to her kidneys causes her blood pressure to rise dangerously high. For the most part, she has been managed by a strict medication and monitoring routine.
In December, Mila had a series of tests run that determined her left kidney is not receiving enough blood to survive. In efforts to preserve her kidneys, the amazing Renvascular and Transplant team at the Boston Children's Hospital will perform an autotransplant of her left kidney. This means that her kidney will be moved from her renal artery to the iliac artery in her pelvis. If successful, she will return after a period of recovery to have the right kidney moved as well. Each surgery will require long periods in the ICU and continued outpatient care in the weeks following.
There is no cure for Mila's condition. Sadly, this doesn't even guarantee that she can discontinue some of the harsh medications that keep her BP stable, but this will give her a great chance at living a normal life with two healthy kidneys.
