Angels for Aizen - 18 month old battling MDS
Aizen was born July 15, 2017 at 33 weeks weighing 3 lbs and 2.1 oz. An emergency C-Section was required because doctor's were unable to find a heartbeat for 4 minutes. For 1 month, Aizen was in the NICU due to low oxygen levels and a low platelet count, being tube fed. In order for his family to bring him home, Aizen needed to get strong enough to feed and breathe on his own. Aizen is now a happy 18 month old playful baby, the youngest of 8 siblings!
In the last 6 months, Aizen began having recurrent pneumonia and each time his platelets and white counts were low. After a few episodes of this, his pediatrician sent him to a hematologist/oncologist to follow his blood counts. During his most recent illness, his platelets and white count fell critically low. Doctors decided to order medicals tests: bone marrow aspiration, biopsy and a leukemia panel to check for cancer.
When we received the results, our whole world came crashing down! He has been diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, an often unrecognized and under diagnosed rare group of bone marrow failure disorders, where the body no longer makes enough healthy, normal blood cells in the bone marrow. The disease is also known as a form of blood cancer.
Aizen is in need of a bone marrow transplant to cure MDS. We are grateful it was caught early enough where he does not have leukemia, however he is still at a high risk of developing it. Our doctors advised us that this is the time to take action and give him the best odds.
This is where we are asking for your help. Although my husband and I, and Aizen's siblings are willing to do whatever it takes for their brother, insurance will not cover he $1200 per person cost to find out who is a match for Aizen. We both work full time jobs, but the medical costs that we have and will continue to face for time off, doctor's visits, co-payments, medication and procedures are quickly adding up causing financial difficulties.
