Aloha!! My name is Angellee Yagong and I am 13 years old. I have been selected as a student ambassador for People To People. This group will travel to London, Wales, the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Scotland. This is an amazing opportunity that I would love to take part in.
These are some projects I’ve been involved in that I believe helped me develop the necessary leadership skills and shows my initiative. I was a volunteer reading teacher for kindergarteners in the summer of 2013 for Kulia Na Mo’o at Honoka’a Elementary school. I independently wrote lesson plans that focused on sight words and fluency. To display the student's growth I wrote and directed an original rendition of "The Three Billy Goats Gruff", which the children performed on the last day. The performance showcased their improvement and allowed them to show off what amazing readers they grew into.
In the 6th grade I served as Student Body Council President and I elected Class President in the 7th grade. Being president taught me important leadership skills that I can apply throughout my life. I learned how to rely on a team to support me and I will cherish the experience I gained from being involved in student government. I learned the importance of compromise and gained a lot of confidence through public speaking.
I was also selected to attend a S.T.E.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) conference at University of Hawaii Manoa on Oahu. This trip taught me about the opportunities available at UH Manoa and widened my understanding of what engineers are and their importance to the world. This stimulated a lot of thought about my future and showed me once again how important education is to my future.
I believe that being able to travel and learn about different cultures will be extremely beneficial to me. Being from Hawaii means that I am very secluded from the rest of the world. I want to be an author but I haven’t experienced enough of the world to correctly portray the different places and people. Being able to travel with People to People is more than anything I can learn in a classroom, because I wont just be hearing about it I will be experiencing and living it first hand. Going on this trip will teach me maturity and responsibility that will help me through out my life. Lastly it has been proven that 80% of People to People alumni get into the college of their dreams, and 75% graduate with honors. People to People is an amazing opportunity I don’t want to miss. Thank you for reading this letter I hope you will consider helping me get to Europe.
My fundraising goal is $6,500 I know its a big goal but with your help and a lot of hard work it’s definitely achievable. Thank you so much for taking time out of your schedule to read this. I hope you will consider donating.
Warmest Aloha,
Angellee Yagong
