Hi,

This fund is for me to send money to my father, Dr. Alexandros Vgontzas, who is the director of the Mobile Mental Health Unit (MMHU) in Heraklion Prefacture, Crete, Greece.

The MMHU provides outpatient care for 140,000 underserved people with regular visits at community health centers that are located in rural areas. It was established in 2013 and includes my father, a psychiatrist, who volunteers his time, psychologists, and a network of primary care providers, social workers and local representatives.

At 9AM on September 27th, 2021, the region suffered a severe earthquake with many aftershocks. The damage is still being counted, but hundreds if not thousands of people are displaced. Many are suffering from understandable fear and anxiety. The MMHU was there the NEXT MORNING, as it has been routinely for years and has since been holding emergency daily clinic to meet the increased needs.

I am collecting donations from friends in the United States that I will then transfer to a fund my father has created in Greece to support the functions of the MMHU.

The clinic is currently being held in a tent in the emergency housing area and the team has also been visiting the villages nearby, where my father reports that many displaced people are staying with relatives or in their cars.
