Acting at NIDA in Australia
Donation protected
ONCE UPON A TIME IN A GALAXY FAR FAR AWAY I was a girl who dreamed of becoming an actress. Today I am one of 12 students selected to participate in the Advanced Actors Residency Course at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney, Australia. You know when something rare and entirely amazing happens in your life? For me, this is that. I just need your help to get there...
The Backstory
My name is Angela Jaymes and I caught the acting bug at 13. Since dying my first dramatic death on the beat up stage of my middle school nearly eleven years ago, I experienced a moment, a sense of freedom and joy, that would re-route the course of my entire life.
Now I am 24, no longer a starry eyed adolescent but a fully-formed young adult with gears in motion. Formally educated at Emerson College, one of the leading performing arts institutions in the country, I have worked professionally onstage, in commercials, and this last Fall landed my very first speaking role in a feature film . Moreover, my life long passion for learning, as well as my core belief in the benefits of arts education inspired me to to obtain my teaching license in Theatre in 2014. Since then, I have had the pleasure of working as director, movement specialist, choreographer, and dialect coach for kids 6-18 throughout the Boston area. But my boldest endeaver is yet to come....This Fall, I will push the ceiling of my career, my comfort zone, and my committment to this life by making the big move to Los Angeles, American cinema's biggest shark tank. I am absolutely out of my mind, but for me there is no going back, only forward.
The Program
This Summer, moving forward means crossing an ocean, (well actually two), to pursue one of the biggest opportunties offered to me as a young artist. The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) has given me one of 12 slots in their Winter Advanced Actors Residency Program. This means:
~Two weeks of intensive voice, movement, scene, and camera work with top professors at one of the most prestigeous dramatic institutions in Australia.
~Being exposed to new skills and perspectives from an international faculty base, as well as the chance to develop relationships with a network of industry professionals from around the globe.
~Obtaining a wealth of knowledge that I will be able to draw from as a young theatre educator and incorporate into my future lessonplans.
The Need
As a full-time member of the working world and holder of about 4 part-time jobs (actor life), having 14 whole days to devote exclusively to studying the artform I fell in love with over a decade ago is a rare and special gift. And yet, while the romance of this program is real, the reality does not come free. Tuition, airfare, and lodging are all expenses I will have to negotiate. As someone who is also squirrelling away money in preparation for a life-changing move to LA, affording a program like this presents a huge challenge for someone attempting to do it all on her own.
I humbly ask that you consider donating to a young artist who has always understood the profound value of education in molding a person's future. After a decade of training and safe simulation, I have reached the point in my life where NOW IS THE TIME to strike out, stay focused, and grasp the future I dreamed for myself so many years ago. I have already come this far; I am now the freshly minted professional I sought out to be when I was 13. Today the stakes are higher. I work towards actually sustaining a life as one. The Advanced Actors Residency Program at NIDA is professional development at its finest. Please help me bring my growth as an artist and educactor to new heights by sending me through its doors.
