Angela Simmons, how can you explain her in just one word? The problem is, you can't...she is strong (both head and heart), she is beautiful (inside and out), she is funny, sweet, kind and caring. Essentially, she has a heart of gold and a lot of love to give. There are many of us who have been lucky enough to call her a friend. Right now, that friend, needs our support and love in return.
In March, 2020, Angela's world came crashing down with a phone call from her doctor advising her they needed her to come in and review the results of her annual breast exam. She just knew it was not going to be good news, but she never thought it would be as bad as it was. On March 13 (yep, Friday the 13th), she was given a diagnosis of breast cancer. She would then need to move forward with chemo, double mastectomy, hysterectomy and reconstruction. What a daunting thought and so much to take in and process.
Luckily, her mom, Gram Pam, has stepped in to help her thru the process with the many procedures, doctors appointments, endless tests and medications - oh, for the medications - one that makes her feel better, one that makes her feel bad and then the nausea and pain. She is also helping to care for the children's needs as well. Pam is a bull dog, too, she makes sure to keep the germs out and insures there is safe distancing being practiced to keep Angela's compromised immune system safe!
A little bit about Angela - she is a single mom, with three beautiful kids, working hard every day to keep her family fed and with a roof over their head. Everything she does, she does for them - she is the center of their world, their provider, their cheerleader and their friend. She is their everything, and they are her everything. Right now, Angela worries not about herself, but about what the future will bring if something happens to her, with that thought, she has chosen to fight and fight she will. We will see to it that she never gives up, we remind her daily that she is strong and can do this, no matter how hard it gets or how much she wants to give up, she can't - she can't and she won't.
Angela's battle began on April 23, 2020, her first, of eight, chemo treatments ensued, she had no idea what to expect or how she would feel. She was scheduled to have chemo every other week until July 31, 2020 - just before her 7th treatment, some good news - if you can call it that - she was told that she will be able to discontinue chemo after her 7th treatment on July 17, 2020. Praise the Lord.
On September 3, 2020, Angela is scheduled to have her double mastectomy and ovaries removed; reconstructive surgery to be scheduled at a later date. Since her journey began, Angela has not asked anyone for anything, except for love and support, and a shoulder to cry on (over the phone, of course - damn Covid), we all try to pitch in where we can, because we know she will not ask for a bag of groceries or a couple bucks to help with the ever rising costs of her medical treatments, surgeries, medications and recoveries. So, we, her work family, have decided it's time to help ease some of the burden of her increasing medical costs and the burden of the bills that come in daily. She is too proud to ask for the help, so we are going to try and give it to her, but we will need your help in doing so - please help if you can. Even if it's a small donation, every little bit helps in a big way.
When this is all said and done, Angela and her family will be grateful for the assistance given to her and I am certain, when the time comes, and this becomes a distant memory, they will pay it forward to another woman, man and family in need. Thank you for taking the moment to read about this amazing person and her fighting spirit.
She still has a long road to travel and will definitely be ready to say, "Bye, Felicia!", as this becomes a part of her story.
We love you, Angela, stay strong! You is kind, you is smart, you is important - don't ever forget it!
