A New Kidney For John - The Story
In September 2014, John, a 16-year-old honors student and electric guitar enthusiast, suffered total kidney failure. As an otherwise healthy teenager displaying no real symptoms of kidney disease, John's condition surprised his family and doctor, and he was in intensive care for a week, undergoing hemodialysis daily during that time.
The kidneys regulate blood pressure and remove toxins from the blood. The blood pressure of a healthy teenager is about 110/70. John was admitted to the hospital with a blood pressure of 180/110 and blood toxins Creatinine and BUN levels of 16 and 140, respectively, which is 10 times the normal level.
John's Present And Future
Dialysis treats kidney failure by filtering the toxins from the blood, basically doing the kidneys’ job for them. John currently undergoes hemodialysis three times a week for three hours each time and will soon use peritoneal dialysis (PD) as his primary means of blood filtration. Dialysis is an effective treatment on a temporary timeline, but in six to 12 months, John will need to be placed on the kidney transplant list.
The only real treatment for John’s alarming and unfair situation is a new kidney. Our hope is that John’s sister, Emily, will be a match for him, as the time-consuming nature of dialysis greatly interferes with John’s life as a normal teenager.
The Goal
Our hope is to raise $100,000 to cover the cost of John's medical expenses, including the costs of dialysis and kidney transplant. With your help, John will have a better chance at fulfilling his dreams of becoming a bioengineer and shredding super hard on his guitar. (A guy can dream of becoming Jimmy Page, can't he?)
