Hope for Andy

The Arentz Kids wanted to share some unfortunate news:

On Wednesday, February 19th,  our dad (Andy) was going in for a heart ablation. This was a procedure that he had scheduled for his second time as he suffers from A-fib (irregular heartbeat). After his procedure he was taken to the PACU to recover where they noticed he was acting a little different and was not responding to neurological (neuro) checks. They soon found out that he suffered a stroke during the procedure. He was immediately taken to the ICU where the team of doctors assessed him to figure out the next steps. The next steps were the obvious, find the clot and get it out as soon as possible. The part of the brain that was affected was the temporal lobe which affects visual memory, language comprehension, and emotion association. The team of doctors were able to fish the clot out by going up his femoral artery to his brain. This was about a 30 minute procedure that seemed like it lasted 3 hours. After his emergency surgery he was then sent back up to the ICU where he was for the next two days. He was evaluated every 30-60 minutes with neuro checks. He was having a hard time saying names, putting sentences together, and saying numbers. The stroke team is very pleased with the progress he has made so far granted the size of the brain that has been damaged. He has made some great progress over the last 3 days but there is still a long road ahead. With speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy he will be a busy man trying to get back to normal again. This is obviously not the way we wanted to start 2020, but we know with our tight knit family, support from family and friends, and our faith we are confident our dad can get through this. We are unsure of our dads future at this time, we expect him to make close to full recovery, but we are taking one day at a time.

If you feel called to do so, we are asking for donations to help our family through this tough time. With dad not able to work for some time and mom helping him through recovery, the medical expenses/regular living expenses are adding up. No amount is too small. Thank you so so so much for your support.

We would also like to add to keep the communication with my mom to a minimum as she is helping dad at all times. If there is anything that you need us to pass along to her, we would be happy to do so.

Love,
