Andy Pearson's ALS Journey
Donation protected
In early 2024, Andy was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Motor Neuron Disease or Lou Gehrig's Disease. Symptoms that led us to seek testing included his hands seizing, slurred speech, and no longer being able to run. Andy had been running for years and was training for another half marathon before the onset of symptoms. Later last year, we found out that Andy also has Frontal Temporal Dementia (FTD), which can coincide in about 5-25% of ALS patients. ALS is a terminal prognosis, but thankfully there are drug therapies we have access to that help prolong Andy's lung and muscle functions to give him some more time. ALS research is at risk and we are sharing an ALS.org fundraiser for their invaluable work.
Life has changed significantly since we began this journey of learning a new "normal" that changes over time as Andy's illness progresses. We have an absolutely incredible support system and much to be thankful for. There is a lot to be said about taking it one day at a time. We are focused on spending quality time with others and making memories together. Some of Andy's "bucket list" items are being brought to fruition which truly makes life sweeter.
However, with terminal illness, there are several harsh realities we must face. Andy had to leave his finance career after diagnosis and is on permanent disability. I have taken leave from my in-person jobs as the need for me to be home to care for Andy and Elle is our priority. I am currently looking for remote work that makes sense.
We have our usual monthly bills, but also must manage additional costs for medical needs, accessibility equipment, prescriptions, and other expenses that can add up pretty quickly. Asking for help is humbling, to say the least. It's not something comfortable or familiar for me, or for Andy. If you feel led to help in any way, we gratefully appreciate your generosity. Every word of encouragement, prayer, cent, meal, or time spent IS LOVE.
From our hearts to yours,
Rach, Andy, Elle, Haydn & Jada
