Andrew's Diabetes Care Campaign
Donation protected
Tonight will mark one week since our 10 year old Andrew went to the hospital with diabetic ketoacidosis and the words Type 1 Diabetes forever changed all our lives.
He is back home now, and is able to check his blood sugar (min. 5 times a day) by poking his fingers, and most of the time he injects himself with his insulin (min. 4 times per day). Before a bite goes into his mouth, he has learned he must calculate the exact number of carbohydrates he will eat and first inject the right amount of insulin. Andrew is trying to handle his new diagnosis with a lot of maturity and grit, but the words, “I hate diabetes”, have also escaped his young lips.
We were overwhelmed by all the well wishes on Facebook from all of you, and I know a number of you asked how you can help. Three things come to mind:
1. Prayer - We thank God for the circumstances that allowed us to get Andrew treated in time, for wisdom for the doctors, and for healing while he was in the hospital. Unfortunately there is no cure for Type 1 and he could have many struggles with his health in the years ahead. Please pray for this adjustment time, and for him physically and emotionally for the future.
2. Encouragement - I think it would be great if he could get some cards of encouragement and if you would like to write him, pm me for our address.
3. Medical Fund Donation - We belong to a healthshare, so thankfully his time at the hospital was covered. Unfortunately it does not cover prescriptions or diabetic equipment. Diabetes is a very expensive disease, and he is going to need these things for the rest of his life. If you would like to donate, we will make sure every dollar goes to his care.
The Go Fund Me goal amount may seem large, but we chose the amount to reflect ONLY a box of each of his two insulin liquids, which according to his paperwork is approximately a ONE MONTH supply. Throw in all the other items that filled our two bags at the pharmacy, future possibilities of a continuous monitor, pump, etc., and you can see why we have set up this fund.
It would be great if we could raise even more than just one month’s supply of insulin, enough to start an account that we can draw from to pay for his upcoming needs, but whatever you would like to donate would be great.
Thank you everyone for caring for Andrew and our family!
