Andrew Michael Sutter

October 27, 1993 – December 11, 2016

“Don’t let a little thing like the fall of your empire keep you from building your own Rome.” – Andrew Sutter, from his 2012 Valedictorian speech.

Andrew Sutter, age 23, passed away this past Sunday evening while at his home in College Station.  He always stayed in good physical condition, but was diagnosed with type one diabetes in high school and passed away due to a diabetic complication. Andrew is survived by his parents Dr. David and Vivian Sutter, and his two younger sisters: Bethany and Cara.

Andrew was born and raised in Portland, TX. He graduated from Gregory-Portland High School in 2012 as Valedictorian and a National Merit Scholar. While succeeding academically, he also enjoyed a love for basketball and played on the varsity team. Andrew completed his undergraduate degree at Texas A&M University, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors of Science in Biomedical Engineering. He served as Community Service Chair in the Pre-Med Society at Texas A&M. Andrew was in his first year of medical school at Texas A&M College of Medicine.

Andrew was very active. He loved mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, or anything outside. He and his family visited Colorado often. Andrew and his roommates – Harrison Brewer and Luka Budilo – would frequently go on adventures in College Station, hiking around Lake Bryan, biking on trails they’d find together, and skeet shooting. They also enjoyed hanging out at their house, grilling and having backyard campfires. Andrew had many friends within the Pre-Med Society and medical school who also spent much time with him and loved him immensely.

Andrew was truly one of a kind – diligent, hardworking, intelligent beyond compare, witty, dependable. He had incredible focus. So many hours were spent behind closed doors studying. Andrew had a true passion for learning; he genuinely enjoyed the pursuit of knowledge.  Even with his dedication to school, Andrew stayed lighthearted. He was the guy in the room that wouldn’t say much, but when he did, everyone in the room was laughing hysterically. No matter the hour, he was there for his family and friends. He took care of his sisters and made sure they knew they could call on him for a ride, help with homework or when they needed a strong stable hand and good advice. He spent countless hours with his grandparents enjoying special meals and holidays. Andrew Sutter is a name the Portland and College Station community will never forget. The weight of sorrow is unspeakable; but we honor Andrew, celebrating and thanking God for the life he lived so well.

Andrew would want nothing more than to provide the opportunity to support local students achieve the academic pursuits he so loved. A memorial has been set up in Andrew’s name to provide scholarships to high school students to help them with their academic careers. Donations may be sent to the Andrew Sutter Memorial Fund, c/o Frost Bank, 500 West Broadway, Portland, TX 78374 or this Go Fund Me account.  The funeral will be held Saturday December 17, 2016, at the Gregory-Portland Junior High School at 2:00 pm.
