On May 30th, 2016, Andy was relaxing with his family at home where his journey began. For some time, Andy was having numbness going on in his legs and daily back pain but like any typical person who is in their thirties, brushes it off and doesn’t think a whole lot into the subject till one day getting up from the couch he completely dropped and from that moment on was not able to stand up on his own. We called 911 and had him removed by ambulance to the hospital in Boston. At that time the doctors took a look at him and instantly said he had to go in for emergency spinal surgery. The surgery lasted twelve grueling hours and gave Andy a run for his money in the last hour or so. Andy woke up after a few days being intubated to realize he could no longer feel his legs and has since been paralyzed from the T-9 Vertebra down with a high chance of never getting any sensation back.
The condition Andy was diagnosed with is called Forestier’s Disease or DISH. Dish stands for diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis. Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a bony hardening (calcification) of ligaments in areas where they attach to your spine. diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis may cause no symptoms and require no treatment. The most common symptoms are mild to moderate pain and stiffness in your upper back. DISH can also affect your neck and lower back. Some people have DISH in other areas, such as shoulders, elbows, knees and heels. A non-inflammatory condition, DISH can be progressive. As it worsens, it can cause serious complications.
Andy has spent the last five months away from his loving girlfriend, little girl, and family and finally has the chance to come home and start living life and adapting in a whole new way. Things are not over and Andy has continued to carry on each day with his fun loving witty personality making everyone laugh just thanking above that he is alive to do so and has a chance to live life… it might be a little different but an opportunity.
Andy isn’t normally one to ask for a helping hand but unfortunately everyone needs some help from time to time. The reason for this fund is to help out with his medical expenses now and in the future as he will have to go back to rehab once his bedsore heals and he can start to transfer into a wheelchair and become mobile. All he wants is that chance to live the most independent life he can with the love and support from his family and friends. As you all know insurance helps a little bit but with the amount of equipment that is needed to aid in Andy’s daily needs, the numbers begin to sky rocket and become astronomical.
Thank you for listening and we would greatly appreciate any help that anyone could contribute and LET’S GET ANDY MOBILE AGAIN!!!
