Andrew Allaby's road to recovery

Early in October of 2019 Andrew had surgery on his right foot to correct a problem with a diabetic ulcer that had appeared in November of 2018. After being in a cast for most of the summer of 2019 he was scheduled for corrective surgery. When he went in for his first post-op checkup everything looked like it was healing well and the sutures were taken out. He was to return around the middle of November for follow-up. The day before he went in, he noticed there was a blister over the incision and was full of blood. He had become sick but thought it was just a cold he had picked up the last weekend of fall football but when he got into the hospital it was discovered that he had a bad infection instead. He was admitted to the hospital that night and began his long recovery journey.
After being admitted and seeing an orthopedic surgeon he was informed that the infection had gotten into the bones of his right foot and the only way to correct the problem was to amputate his foot. On December 13, 2019, Andrew had his right leg removed roughly about 6-8" below his right knee. Since that time Andrew spent the following 16+ weeks in the hospital recovering dealing first with a bout of delirium post-surgery for approximately 2 weeks. At the same time, he began his physio relearning the simple things in life, walking became hopping with the use of a walker, longer distances were covered with the use of a manual wheelchair, going to the bathroom, showering on a bench and the daily chore of dressing have all become a little different now that he is an amputee.
Andrew has accepted his new challenge in life head on and hasn’t looked back and making the best out of the situation. In April 2020 just as covid hit Andrew was moved to the Hanwell special care home where he currently resided.
Andrew has been involved with Capital Area Minor Football Association for over 25 years. Even while still in a hospital bed last spring he put in many hours with the plans for a spring tackle season. The Covid outbreak had other plans. With the fall season approaching he was chomping at the bit to at the very least get out to time minor flag games on Sunday’s but with the help of family and friends Andrew was able to attend and score most of the fall high school and minor flag football games last fall. He has since taken over as president or the organization and planning of the spring and fall football seasons with his executive.
Andrew had set a goal for himself once he was able to move around more comfortably, he wanted to drive again. Being so far out of town and having to rely on others for drives is not what he likes to do.
On March 5th of this year, Andrew received the call he had been waiting for. He was going to be evaluated for driving again at Stan Cassidy. On March 9th Andrew went through the evaluation process and then was able to drive the car using the left foot gas pedal and was given the green light to pursue his dream.
I am setting up this go fund me page to help raise money to have his van fixed up, He needs to get insurance, registration and safety inspected. He does qualify for some funding of the cost to have a left foot gas pedel installed, but the reminder will be out of pocket and since having the amputation Andrew has not worked.
On behalf of Andrew and his family, we greatly appreciated all the help and support you have showed over the last year, it means a lot.
Thank you,
Heidi Boulter (sister)
