Andrea's Journey with CML

Recently our cousin Andrea Araujo-Perez has been diagnosed with CML (Chronic Myeloid Leukemia) and AVN (Avascular Necrosis) in her left hip. • CML is a rare blood cancer that affects the bone marrow and is caused by a gene mutation. This can go unnoticed for a while (in this case months and months) and is usually found during a routine blood test. • AVN in simple terms is the death and decay of a bone due to trauma, lack of blood to the affected area or disease. (in this case, was caused my CML). AVN comes with a high risk of the bone collapsing - which The doctors hope to avoid. Andrea has already had a core decompression procedure which will hopefully help and buy some time before going in for a full hip replacement. On the 11th of February, she was unexpectedly diagnosed with CML after having some routine blood tests in the Emergency Department for a fever, only to be diagnosed with AVN the very next day. If you have met Andrea, you would not have known that she had leukaemia because in reality, neither did she. Andrea is a gorgeous , fun fit and healthy 22 year old who loves the gym, specifically CrossFit. unfortunately, both these diseases are rare - Especially in patients under the age of 40. On top of that, there is a 1-10% chance to have AVN caused by CML. We always knew she was a rare spirit. For now, she is stable and she is managing the CML it’s only been 2 weeks , Due to her heavy medications and her surgery she is under strict non weight bearing restrictions on her left leg which has put her out of work for quite some time. With Andrea’s parents living in Queensland and having to fly to Sydney to help out, specialist appointments, medications and bills piling up we are trying to find a way we can help both her and her family so we are aiming for an amount of $2000 to get her going and help support the family.
