Andrea is home now, but her journey is far from over and, in fact, just beginning. As you know, Andrea has left Craig and has somewhat settled into her apartment. It is on the ground floor, making it accessible for entering but not modified for a handicapped individual.
Andrea receives trained medical assistance from two CNAs each morning to help her out of bed, and each evening to help her into bed, and no more. She, like anyone with an upper spinal cord injury, requires around the clock care, which is very much more care than is being provided by Medicaid. Without this care, Andrea’s health would be at risk, and she would not be able to remain at home, and live independently. As a single mother, Andrea’s independence is so important to her and her two wonderful children, Santiago and Esperanza. So, Andrea’s family members have stepped up to provide this care, because in the Romero family, the fight is never fought alone.
To their surprise, while at Craig hospital, the family was told that the most important thing that Andrea and her family can do to keep her healthy is to protect her skin. Paralyzed individuals are at great risk of developing bed sores, these sores often lead to infections, hospitalizations, and are life threatening. Andrea works hard every day in her chair to transfer her weight every fifteen minutes to prevent sores. But while in bed, Andrea cannot weight shift herself and needs someone to turn her at least twice during the night that is every 5 hours. This turning requires two individuals (Teddy helps with every turn). Andrea already suffers from bed sores, so without these shifts during the night they could worsen, and more could develop.
To ensure that Andrea’s skin stays healthy, Andrea’s brothers Mark and Juan, her niece and nephew, devoted father Ray, and loving boyfriend Teddy have all been turning Andrea through the night. What’s worse, is during those times, Andrea is woken up and often not able to go back to sleep. This has had a significant impact not only on her sleep, but her quality of life, and not being able to rest adequately has greatly affected not only Andrea, but the family members who are there every day and every hour making sure she is taken care of. Fortunately during the corona-virus shutdown, these family members, mostly educators, have been able to provide this essential care for Andrea. However, with school starting and Teddy going back to work the family will no longer be able to continue the schedule they have maintained since Andrea’s accident in December of last year.
This raises so many concerns and anxiety causing the family to look into other means that can keep Andrea’s weight shifts regular while keeping her as safe and healthy. After a lot of research and education, the family has found a solution. The Freedom Bed! The Freedom Bed is a unique, computer-controlled, therapy system that manually or automatically turns the bed-user to different stable sleeping positions without the aid of caregivers or institutional staff. With this bed Andrea would be able to sleep not only comfortably, but without interruption, even while the bed repositions her! This would dramatically change things for Andrea and will not only improve her sleep and quality rest, but will allow her to stay at home and maintain her independence. Most importantly, this bed prevents and treats bed sores and breakdowns, making sure that Andrea’s skin is maintained and that stays healthy.
For the last several months, Andrea’s family has continued this schedule while Medicaid reviewed her file and determined whether they would help obtain the bed for her. Unfortunately, the request has been denied. This leaves the entire burden of the cost to Andrea’s family.
The Romero family is committed to keeping Andrea healthy and independent, so they have made the decision to try and purchase the bed. We need your help. When Andrea had her accident in December we reached out and asked for assistance and people were kind enough to donate funds. These donated funds went to the purchase of a handicapped accessible van, Andrea’s bed that she is using now, medical supplies and furniture to get her apartment ready for her to come home, and other medical expenses. We ask again for your kindness in donating funds to assist us in purchasing this life changing medical Freedom Bed. The cost of the bed is $50,000 which is a large financial burden that we are hoping to get assistance with.
Please watch the video and information on the bed that I have included. This will be life changing for Andrea and allow her to sleep through the night without the concern of waking up or getting bed sores affecting her overall health. This will give Andrea back a bit of the “normal” life that she used to live and keep that beautiful smile that we all adore on her face. Thank you and God Bless You.
