Andrea was diagnosed with breast cancer stage 2A just two weeks before her wedding to Mike in 2011 when she was 31 years old. The day after they came home from their honeymoon, Andrea had a medication port surgically inserted and she started chemo. She had 16 total rounds of chemo, then had a bilateral (double) mastectomy in 2012. This whole situation surely wasn't how either Andrea or Mike wanted to start their marriage, and hopes of parenthood were put on hold. After a few reconstruction surgeries, they seemed to be clear of cancer.
But in 2014, the cancer came back and spread to Andrea's liver and bones. Hormone therapy failed, as well as 3 other chemotherapy agents. Her doctor referred her to Ohio State, where she started her first clinical trial, which was also unsuccessful. Andrea is now on her second clinical trial. She's has followed every step her doctors have asked and she remains hopeful for a cure.
Surprisingly enough, things got even worse. In May 2018, Andrea's husband, Mike, was diagnosed with colorectal cancer at 38 years old. This situation was understandably devastating to them both, particularly in light of their struggles the past 7 years.
Over the past few months, Andrea had to quit her job due to poor health and treatment related complications. Mike underwent chemo and radiation to treat his cancer. Andrea applied for disability and was approved, BUT those checks won't arrive for another few months. Mike had surgery on Jan 8th to remove any remaining cancer. He will be off work for an extended period of time. He has no sick or vacation time left between caring for Andrea and his own treatment.
Translated- this couple will have NO income for awhile and savings have been exhausted with medical costs. They are in IMMEDIATE need of funds to get them thru until Mike can go back to work and Andrea's disability money arrives.
