I’m reaching out with a heavy heart to ask for your support for my dad, who is currently battling cancer in South Africa.

Despite having medical insurance, many of the essential treatments he needs aren’t fully covered, and the out-of-pocket costs are overwhelming. He’s recently been scheduled for six weeks of daily radiotherapy, which requires him to travel 2 to 3 hours each way to reach the nearest hospital that can provide this treatment.

Not only is this a physically and emotionally exhausting journey, but the financial strain is devastating. The cost of fuel and toll gates alone will be crippling — and to make things even harder, my dad doesn’t receive any form of sick pay while undergoing treatment. That means no income at a time when expenses are mounting.

One alternative is for him to stay at a CANSA care facility closer to the hospital during the week, which would reduce the travel costs and fatigue. But that means being away from home for weeks at a time, leaving my mum alone — and that’s incredibly hard on both of them emotionally.

We are doing everything we can as a family to support him, but we’ve reached a point where we need help. Every donation, no matter how small, will go directly toward:

• Daily travel costs (fuel and toll fees) or accommodation at the CANSA facility

• Medical treatments and medications not covered by insurance

• Basic living expenses during his treatment period
