Nancy Marxkors' Battle with Long COVID
Donation protected
This fundraiser has been created for our sister, Nancy Johnson Marxkors. In January 2022, she contracted COVID and her life was turned upside down. She was fully vaccinated and took every precaution, but she has several autoimmune diseases and those made her severely immunocompromised and highly susceptible to the devastating effects of COVID. Nancy quickly decompensated and spent the next seven weeks on a ventilator in a medically induced coma. She was near death on several occasions. Due to her extensive stay in the ICU, Nancy developed Critical Illness Myopathy, a disease that caused debilitating weakness and left her unable to move.
Nancy spent the next five months in several rehab facilities working to get stronger and re-learning how to swallow, talk, and move her arms and legs. She was able to return to her home in August, but still could not walk or perform daily living activities on her own. With weekly therapy and much courage, Nancy is making progress. While still confined to a wheelchair the majority of her day, she is beginning to walk short distances using a walker with the help of a caregiver. She requires round the clock in-home care at a cost of $3,000 per month which is not covered by insurance. She is using her teacher pension and her life savings to pay for medical expenses but is rapidly running out of money. We know Nancy will be grateful for any contribution.
