Hello, my name is Sylvia Robledo and I'm asking you to financially support my incredibly smart, dynamic and deserving colleague and friend Ana Gomez Orellana fulfill her dream to attend graduate school at UC San Diego. She will be studying a masters degree in International Affairs at the School of Global Policy and Strategy this fall. Her ultimate goal is to affect immigration policy to improve the quality of life for Latinos in the world.
She herself is an immigrant from Mexico who came to this country at the age of 7 with her family. Because of her academic excellence she was accepted to and attended UCLA and graduated with honors in Political Science and History. During that time she managed to pay for her own tuition through maintaining several odd jobs including babysitting, clerical work and janitorial services because she could not qualify for financial assistance while also facing the loss of her mother. This struggle led her to become a strong advocate and leader to support the Dream Act.
As a professional she has consistently worked in public service helping disadvantaged immigrant communities throughout Los Angeles. She has a proven track record of commitment to empowering those that have been disenfranchised in the system. She worked in civic engagement at Dolores Mission in Boyle Heights and then as a Field Organizer in MacArthur Park, Pico Union and University Park for the Office of Councilmember Gil Cedillo.
It is even more challenging to maintaing this pace of work and be academically successful at a graduate level. This is why we are asking for assistance in offsetting some of the books, supplies and living expenses for her first year. She has currently managed to attain scholarships to assist her with tuition, but we still need your help to meet the final goal.
I am asking you, my friends and colleagues to help support a worthy young woman who will continue to amaze us in the future with her commitment to mentoring other young women and helping our community.
