Hi, my name is Jazmin and I am a 2014 graduate of I.C. Norcom High School (Norcom), a historically black public high school based in Downtown Portsmouth, Virginia. 2024 marks my graduating class's 10-Year anniversary, and to commemorate this milestone we'd love to give back to our school in the best way possible: by supporting its students!
Our goal is to provide financial assistance to support at least one lucky student's higher education objectives.
Originally known as the Chestnut Street "Colored" School, Norcom was constructed in 1878 as the first high school for black students in Portsmouth. In 1953, the school adopted its current namesake, "I. C. Norcom," in honor of its first supervising principal, Israel Charles Norcom.
Mr. Norcom was an active advocate for the educational and social advancement of Portsmouth's black population. Having studied at renown Universities - including Howard, the University of Virginia, Harvard, and Yale - Norcom dedicated his life to Portsmouth's social progression, emphasizing the value of local activism and higher education.
My former classmates and I aim to contribute to our community in this same manner: in facilitating local initiatives that promote educational development, entrepreneurship, and community engagement.
Today, 98% of Norcom's student population is considered economically disadvantaged, with minimal means to fund their higher education objectives. The proceeds from this fundraiser will serve as a crucial resource for at least one deserving I.C. Norcom 2024 Graduate, so we truly appreciate any support you're able to provide!
