Amy's Story- Waiting for a Life Saving Heart Transplant

Donation protected
Amy was born with a rare and severe congenital heart defect known as Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA). This condition meant her heart's main arteries were switched, leading to dangerously low oxygen levels and a grim prognosis of only one to three years to live. Thanks to extensive care at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, she endured multiple surgeries, including the Fontan Procedure (open heart surgery) at age 4. Despite a childhood limited by physical restrictions, Amy defied the odds, became an educator, built a family, and now needs life saving surgery to continue thriving.

In 2020, she received a diagnosis of congestive heart failure, with doctors giving her under 10 years to live. Amy was admitted to Toronto General Hospital (Peter Munk Cardiac Centre) in May 2025 and is currently awaiting a heart transplant. She is categorized as a Category 3 candidate, facing a potential waiting period of an average of 12 months for the heart plus extensive post-op care and visits.

As a mother, and being so far away from her family, the emotional and financial toll during the waiting period is intense and at times overwhelming, not for just Amy, but for her family as a whole.

Donations can help her family manage countless unexpected expenses and help them to focus on healing, rather than worrying about the financial burden of needing a new heart.

As a friend, I have watched Amy and her family dealing with a significant amount of stress and financial burden, extending beyond medical expenses.

Many people ask how they can help. We have set up this GoFundMe account as a way for those who love Amy to help her on this journey.

Any donations received would go directly to Amy’s family to help with the following:

● Medications and post-transplant care that are not covered by insurance, which are vital for her survival and recovery.

● Travel and accommodations to enable her daughter, son and husband to visit and provide support during this difficult period.

● Unforeseen expenses, as life continues amidst her journey to recovery

Every donation, regardless of its size, is deeply appreciated and will make a meaningful difference.

Even if you are unable to contribute financially, sharing Amy’s story, this campaign, or considering becoming an organ donor are other ways to help.
