Amy's Broken Foot Hospital Bill

A supposedly fun and memorable holiday went wrong when an unexpected accident occurred during the trip.

My childhood friend, Ameelia Alias Loo, came to Australia to travel around NSW with me and a friend. On the 5th day of her stay, we decided to go hiking at Royal National Park with the intention to visit the famous Figure 8 Pool. The starting point of the hike was about 1 hour drive from my house in Kingsford and it took us about 1 hour and half to hike to the coast (about 3.5 km).

When we reached the coastal area we were amazed with the breath-taking view and decided to take photos, as any tourist would do. Little did we know that the area was hazardous especially during afternoon (high tide).At first we saw the waves were not that big, so we moved closer to the edge of the cliff to take a better photo as the sea as the background. Suddenly, the first big wave came crashing and hit us from behind and all 3 of us was swept away by the furious stream of seawater hitting the rocks. After emerging out of the water, I quickly climbed up the rocks to higher ground but heard Amy’s cry for help. Only then I realized that Amy was left behind. As I tried to help getting her up, she said that she couldn’t feel her right leg and could barely move it. I could see her swollen and bleeding foot.  I quickly cried out for help. Instead of complaining about her pain, I remember the first thing she said after we placed her at a safer spot was, “Aku taknak susahkan parents aku, aku takde duit” (I don’t want to burden my parents, I don’t have enough money).  Fortunately, after everyone moved to a safer spot, I realized I only got some huge cuts on my arm and bruises while the other friend was slightly injured at the leg.

Luckily we weren’t alone at that time and there were people around us that helped throughout the ordeal. They called for an ambulance but since the area was hardly accessible, a helicopter was sent along with a rescue team. We waited for about another hour before the helicopter arrived. The rescue team brought Amy to the nearest hospital while we had to hike back to the carpark and drive to the hospital.

When I arrived at the hospital, Amy was already waiting for the result of the CT scan at the emergency department. After a few hours, the doctor came back to explain her condition. There was a lot of medical jargons but in layman’s terms, there were some small bones in her right foot that was fractured and broken. However, the foot was too swollen to clearly see what’s happening and we need to wait for it to reduce before performing any further treatment. The doctor advised us to wait for about a week for the swelling to reduce and continue treatment in Malaysia. Ameelia was discharged on the night of the event with the assistance of crutches and a boot.

We discussed with the person in charge about the financial cost and told her that Amy does not have travel insurance so the overall estimated cost is :

Hospital bills (Emergency department, CT Scan, X-Ray, Crutches and Boot) - $133

Helicopter/Ambulance - $842.80

Medication - $108.78

Total = $1084.58

As her friend, I, Amirah Zulkiflee, humbly would like to seek for all the help that you can get in order to raise AUD1084.58 which will be used to pay for her overall medical bills.

We would also like to ask for your warm hearted prayers for her speedy recovery. May God Bless Us All.
