Amy Myrbo: medical bills and a wig
Donation protected
The GoFundMes that have touched me are often for artists with terrifyingly large medical bills and no visible means of support - they "don't have jobs," but of course they do. They are artists. So as a grown-ass woman with an academic job and good health insurance, I feel funny asking y'all for anything. But as we all know, in the US "good health insurance" still comes with hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in co-pays, prescription costs, and fees that are the patient's responsibility. As a single-income couple - a scientist and an artist - we don't have those dollars for my breast cancer treatment.
And maybe it's more fun to think about giving money to a wig fund! I have already received one gift and one donated wig (thank you Kimi and Lee and stranger who is a client at The Hive Salon, respectively!), but both are so far from my own hair that wearing them in broad daylight is going to take a bit of mental steeling. I need what's known as a "real-world wig," for those times when I'd like to pass as my healthy self. Good wigs are not cheap - although you can get decent wigs for under $100, the most natural looking ones (still synthetic, not human hair) are more like $400-500. And that's a serious chunk of change.
Thank you so much for reading, and for considering contributing. I know that there are a lot of people who need your money more than I do.
