Our dear friend, family member, and co-worker, Amy, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Amy is just in the beginning stages of meeting with doctors and trying to figure out her treatment plan.
The tumor is small, originated in her breast and has not metastasized. Unfortunately, her receptor test came back negative. Due to the results of this test, and the fact that Amy is so young, the doctor’s want to treat the cancer aggressively. This means that she will most likely have to have chemotherapy for 4-6 months. She will have a month break and then have surgery to remove the cancerous tumor. Radiation is also a treatment possibility. Amy still has to meet with the Oncologist, but she has been told she will most likely start chemotherapy in August. Because of the chemotherapy, Amy will also be undergoing treatment to preserver her fertility. Unfortunately, that means a lot of medications, ultrasounds, and a minor surgery (egg retrieval) in the near future.
Amy’s ability to work and go to school will all be dependent on how she feels, and if the chemotherapy will allow her to be at work.
Amy has a long, tough journey ahead of her. I know that any amount of support is greatly appreciated by both Amy and her entire family.
