Thank you to everyone who has already donated. Through donations from local veterans groups, businesses, friends and family I was able to meet my goal to cover the extra expenses.
On Sept. 26th Michael and I are scheduled for transplant surgery. While we are recovering we will be focusing on raising donations to create Hope; From Me to You, a live organ donor awareness group.
Through the creation of Hope we want to bring awareness about the growing need for live organ donors. Our group will help to educate people on what it takes to be a live organ donor and the donation process to allow them to make a well informed decision before moving forward. Help those interested in becoming donors or recipients make contact with potential donors/recipients and connect them with the appropriate facilities. Be an advocate for both donor and recipient at all times. Be a support person to them through the entire process as needed. Eventually we'd like to be able to help donors/recipients and their families help offset costs incurred that the VA or insurance company does not cover.
In Wisconsin alone, the waiting period for a transplant is anywhere from 5-7 years, most do not make it that long. Every year 114,00 men, women and children are waiting an organ transplant. 82% for a kidney and 13% for a liver. Because of live organ donors, more than 7000 transplants were made possible in 2018!!
