My name is Amy Wax. As one of the only openly conservative tenured professors in the Ivy League, and despite my stellar performance as an award-winning teacher and academic as a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania for decades, my university has imposed "major sanctions" on me based on my alleged remarks and opinions stated in the media, which students have complained are "offensive" and "discriminatory." The penalties include an ongoing one-year suspension at half pay and withdrawal of research funds in perpetuity.
Penn’s actions represent an unprecedented and deeply destructive threat to the practice and traditions of free expression on campus and the tenure protections afforded to professors who express unpopular views. They are further evidence of the “woke” takeover of our university system, which seeks to stifle and punish dissent and purge our campuses of any deviation from a narrow set of progressive dogmas.
My federal lawsuit against Penn, based on accusations of civil rights violations through Penn's application of double standards in the treatment of conservative vs. left-wing professors' speech, has been dismissed by the district court, and that decision is on appeal. I have just filed a state law claim in Pennsylvania for breach of contract based on Penn's violation of its promises, stated in its faculty handbook and elsewhere, to provide academic freedom protections, which have been blatantly violated in my case. Here is a link to that complaint-
(The complaint contains redactions of damaging admissions in the federal proceedings made by Penn employees, which are designed to protect the university from its embarrassing duplicity in the application of its promises of academic free expression.)
I am committed to fighting Penn’s efforts to banish and punish me. But resisting Penn’s campaign is expensive. So please contribute to my legal defense fund and help me continue to fight on.
