My name is Amy Stone I was just a regular person working as a nurse (RN) at a hospital raising 2 kids as a single mom, trying to keep all of the bills paid and then suddenly I had back pain. I went to the chiropractor, but by that night I could not hardly walk. I was so weak and my legs were so wobbly. I finally called the paramedics and went to the ER. I was sent to Heartland Medical Center in St. Joe, MO so I could be further evaluated. After a battery of tests, I found out that I had a urinary tract infection with MRSA virus in it. It had also gone into my blood stream and had gotten into my spine causing osteomylitis of T-8 and had caused a spinal stroke from T-10 down. I was paralyzed from just under my breasts down. The doctors were unsure if I would be paralyzed forever or if I would get feeling back. So far, I have no feeling or use back in my legs. I spent 7 months in rehab and in bed and ended up with a bedsore that I had to surgery on 4 times to remove the dead tissue.. I now have a hole there and a wound vaccumm. The surgeon sees me every month and home health changes it 3 times per week. The surgeon is in KC which is a 2 hour trip.
I am trying to raise money to get a wheel chair accessible van to get to and from the doctor ande also so I can get around. Mobility is important in order for me to regain a life which will allow me to support my children.
I also have thousands of dollaras in medical bills to pay. I had insurance but they only paid 80% to 90% so I still have a lot to pay.
My kids and I are currently living with my mother, but I would like to get out and get a place of our own that is handicap accessible and I hope to one day be able to drive again and get a job.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
