Amy Sims was a role-model for teachers and students alike at our school in Washington Heights, New York City. For seven years she was an empowering presence at school, showing all of us what a strong, fearless and capable woman she was and inspiring us to be our best selves no matter what. The day before her students were to take the Algebra 2/Trigonometry New York State Regents exam in 2013, I received a text from Amy, my friend and colleague, that she was going to the hospital. By the end of that day she was gone. This loss was an enormous loss for our school community.
Together with Amy's family and friends, we established a memorial scholarship in Amy's name to continue to serve the students that she loved so dearly. Our first goal was to offer a scholarship to a Class of 2015 graduate from the high school where Amy was so deservingly respected and admired by her students. We reached this goal and more, awarding scholarships to one or two graduating seniors every year since 2015.
In honor of Amy today, and every day, we are making an effort to get this campaign going again. Please donate what you can, and if you cannot, please share this link. I know that Amy would be beyond happy to help any of the students graduating and we are aiming to continue to do so in her name.
Amy inspired us with her brilliance, at times driving us totally crazy, while making us love her all the same. We hope to honor her outsized presence in this world and in our lives by helping one deserving student at a time with this scholarship in her memory.
