Amy Frederick Johnson: Son Murdered

AMY SUSAN FREDERICK JOHNSON

Our beautiful, loving friend has suffered the most extreme loss a person can suffer.  Her handsome and talented son, Steven Michael Johnson, was found murdered on July 23, 2019 in Redding, California.   She is beyond distraught.  One awful truth of this tragedy was that she was not notified by the authorities.  She last spoke to her baby on July 16th.  On August 2nd, Amy thought that she would go on his Face Book page and see what he was up to.  There was one message from one of his friends that read, “ RIP.  I will miss you, friend.”  Amy, who was living in Savannah, GA, took off running to the Sheriff’s Office, and they confirmed her worst fears.  He had been gone that long, and no one took the time or had the heart to let his sweet mother know.

She and Steven had been living in a furnished apartment together, and he being a young 37-year-old man, took off for California with a friend.  As soon as she learned of this travesty she returned to her apartment,  packed up all of her belongings, put them in her car, and drove straight to her daughter and granddaughter at her husband’s family home near Hilton Head, SC.  There she lay in bed, unable to get up.  Her main concern was getting her son’s ashes back to All Saints Episcopal Church in Morristown, TN, where she and both of her children were born and raised.  There was a victim’s fund in Redding that paid for Steven’s cremation and transporting his ashes to Morristown.  That was very helpful to her.

While waiting for Steven’s remains, she worked for weeks with the investigators, the District Attorney, the Coroner and local mortuary.  She had to suffer through  all of the legalities to get him released and sent home. She also had to make funeral arrangements and it was a tortuous wait for her. When Steven finally arrived after all of the criminal investigative work, she drove to Morristown and stayed in a guest suite at the Regency Assisted Living Facility where her mother, Ruth Frederick is in Hospice Care.  Elizabeth Sams- Tuetken, Caroline Benedetti, Carol Whalen Austin, and I (Mary Margaret (Purkey) Wright came running.  I have to say when I first saw Amy 2 days before his funeral, she was whimpering.  It is probably the saddest human sound that I have ever heard---  the sound of ultimate heartbreak.  She showed such dignity and grace at her son’s funeral.

She is now looking to start her life again in this awful “new normal”.  We are asking for all who love her, Steven, Susan, and all of the Frederick and Johnson families, to please help us give her a leg up.  Additionally we are asking for help from those outside the family who can relate to this situation or find the compassion for a fellow human that needs our help. She is going to rest and heal for a little while with Tennessee friends so she can become strong enough to seek gainful employment once again.  We want to provide her with:  first and last month’s rent in a furnished apartment, utility deposits, and some cash in the bank to hold her until she is able to begin an employment search.  We believe that having about 4 months of total funding would be a great place to start this campaign and that this is an understandably fair goal considering the circumstances. Where Amy's new life shall begin is unsure at this moment but we will update you as soon as we know where she lands. We promise to keep everyone posted throughout so you clearly understand where your generous funds are going! Friends, she is so much pain that money should be the last thing that she should be stressing about.  She needs to heal her broken heart and soul.

Now for some background information.  Amy and husband, Ron Johnson got divorced.  Amy moved her 2 babies in with her mother, Ruth, and raised them where she was raised.   Steven started piano lessons when he was 13.  He was so talented that Carson Newman College gave him a scholarship for classical piano; the first of its kind.  Amy was working at Carson Newman as well.  After his freshman year, when he was 19, he was in a horrendous car accident that almost took his life.  He was in a coma, but did recover with some brain injury.  It took about a year for him to recuperate at his grandmother’s home, where they were still living.  Eventually he was able to return to college.

Daughter Susan (and sister to Steven)  got married and had beautiful baby girl, Adelaide (Addy) and moved in her husband’s parents’ home near Hilton Head.  Steven and Amy moved to Savannah, GA to be near them.  During this time, her mother Ruth, sold the house and all of the contents, and moved into hospice care.  Hence, all of Amy’s belongings fit in her car.

She is our lovely Amy, and she is in need.  Please give whatever amount you can because no amount is too small.  She is so kind and giving but now is the time for her to receive and is in  DESPERATE NEED of some help.  Thank you for your time.
