A Unique Kollel
Kollel Rabbonim Tzvi Ashkenazi was founded in Amsterdam in 2017 and is the only Kollel in the Netherlands. The Kollel is headed by R’ Yaakov Ball, a musmach of the Minchas Yitzchak. The full-day Kollel has five avreichim, all of whom have Semicha on Issur V’heter amongst other subjects.
A Mokom Torah
After together completing and being tested on Issur V’heter before Pesach (2019), the Kollel have continued to learn halacha in-depth, starting with the relevant sugyos, the Beis Yosef, Shulchan Aruch, and Nosei Keilim with the aim of reaching psak - halacha lema’aseh. At the conclusion of each month’s study, a week is dedicated to chazorah which concludes with a test, providing motivation and incentive.
There for Others
The Avrechim recognise the need to help others with Torah learning and dedicate hours weekly to learning with members of the community (especially in the evenings). In particular, many local schoolboys benefit from one-on-one learning, which the Avrechim are happy to provide. They offer regular Torah shiurim in shuls across Amsterdam and teach at the local Yarchei Kalloh, amongst other learning initiatives. The wives of the Avreichim play a crucial part in their community engagement, and assist in many areas of the community, including an out-of-school program for teenage girls, regular womens’ social activities, and Shabbos hospitality.
Mesilah – Heritage, Identity, Education
The Amsterdam Jewish Community has more than 20,000 Jews, many of whom have had little exposure to Torah-Judaism. Assimilation is alarmingly high and many Jews have little or no Torah education. Demographically, the community is much dispersed, adding to the difficulty in connecting people to Torah and mitzvos. The community Kollel recognise the necessity to do their utmost to restore Torah primacy to Amsterdam’s historic Jewish community. For this purpose, they founded Mesilah, an educational organisation whose goal is to reach out to Jews across the country and provide authentic Jewish identity, heritage and education to Jews of all ages and religious affiliation. Galvanising the full force of the Avreichim and their wives, Mesilah has participated in organising learning seminars on inspiring topics, brought speakers from abroad, arranged social events and shabbatonim and participated in other outreach initiatives. A monthly Torah sheet containing Torah thoughts, stories, biographies of Gedolim and Jewish history is disseminated in many locations across the city. Mesilah targets the entire community, with a special focus on students and young professionals, and has been warmly received by Jews from all affiliations as a much-needed source of authentic Torah teaching.
Looking to the Future
