Retooled: Highlights from the Hechinger Collection

On Display: January 24 – April 29, 2019, The Chapman Gallery

There is something to be said of a hands-on approach to life. The DIY mentality, if you will. The blood, sweat, and tears of a task can, often times, be more meaningful than the resulting end product. There is a relationship between tools and the hands that hold them that is almost sacred.

John Hechinger had a goal of bringing works of art to his hardware company’s headquarters in order to allow the office more vibrancy. The collection was filled with various tools and industrial scenes that bring a wave of nostalgia over the viewer to a simpler time; as well as embodying the passionate spirit of getting the job done.

The pieces on the walls of Hechinger Co. soon evolved into a widely celebrated collection, featuring inspired and innovative artists such as Jim Dine, Richard Estes, Jacob Lawrence, Lucas Samaras, and many more. The collection consists of a contrast between vibrant pops of colors and a more muted monotone color palate; as well as juxtaposing hard and sharp lines with more fluid figures and shapes. The dimensionality of the works bring a playful feel to an industry that is defined by toughness and ruggedness.

With 42 works of art compiled of both 2 and 3-dimensional pieces, the Hechinger Collection provides a spirited quality to the industrial world. With the initial intention of inspiring those who worked for his company, the purpose of the collection soon grew to something much bigger than itself. It allowed for viewers to have an elevated sense of the world around them—a world viewed from a new consciousness and perspective.

This collection will be on display at the Art Museum of South Texas from January 24 to April 29, 2019, in the Chapman Gallery. With a mission to advance awareness, knowledge, appreciation, and enjoyment of the visual arts for both residents and visitors of South Texas, The Art Museum continuously strives to bring exhibitions to their galleries and spaces that will inspire onlookers. However, it is not an inexpensive endeavor to carry out such a mission.

As a Board Member for the Art Museum of South Texas, I too hold the same mission in helping to bring works of art to our community that will inspire and bring a deeper appreciation and understanding of the world around us. Museum leadership had an amazing idea this year to reach out to other board members and bestow the task of raising exhibition funds upon each of the members. As a member of Team Retooled, I am exhilarated for such a visionary collection to be on display at AMST and ask that you would donate any amount you can to make such a thing happen. Any amount helps and is going towards an amazing cause of supporting the arts!! Share with your friends, family, neighbor, mailman, local barista, whoever! Help me raise my goal of $5,000 and be a part of the first ever crowdsource for AMST!

P.s. Anyone who donates $250 or more will receive a complimentary one-year membership to the Art Museum. If you are already a member, it will be extended for a year! wooooo!!!!!
