Despite many challenges, my students have persevered and grown into intelligent, hardworking, and admirable young adults. They push themselves by taking Advanced Placement courses and demonstrate a deep dedication to broadening their understanding of the world. Our school’s richly diverse student body—95% Black and Latino—celebrates the many cultures represented here. For most of these students, this trip will be their first time traveling abroad, offering an invaluable opportunity for growth and learning.

Their hunger for knowledge inspires me daily as they engage deeply with history and enduring global issues. This year, they have studied Environmental Impact and Cultural Diffusion but have had limited opportunity to witness how these complex issues operate in a different context. That’s why I am seeking funding to support twenty of my students on an educational journey to Peru—a country where rapidly changing waterway systems are reshaping culture and society in profound ways.

This immersive trip will allow students to explore how culture shapes the development of countries over time, and in turn, how STEM fields influence cultural practices. They will visit iconic sites such as Machu Picchu, the Pisac ruins, and the Sacsayhuaman Fortress, guided by expert local historians and artisans. They’ll engage in hands-on activities like pottery-making, jewelry crafting, and weaving demonstrations, providing a tangible connection to the cultural heritage and engineering practices of Peru.

Trip Highlights Include:

Arrival and orientation in Lima followed by a flight to Cuzco.

A guided tour of the ancient Sacsayhuaman Fortress and a walking tour of Cuzco.

Exploration of the Sacred Valley, including the Pisac ruins and market.

Hands-on learning experiences with local artisans in pottery, jewelry, and weaving.

Visits to the Maras salt ponds and the town of Ollantaytambo.

An in-depth excursion to Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, combining guided exploration with free time to appreciate the site’s history and natural beauty.

This experience will deepen my students’ understanding of the dynamic relationship between environment, culture, and technology—helping them see global issues through a new lens and inspiring them to become thoughtful, informed leaders.
