My wonderful godfather had his 1st amputation (leg) from diabetes in 2019.
Despite medication and diet adherence, his diabetes has worsened. In July 2026, he suffered a second amputation for his remaining leg - doctors removed 3 toes.
This fundraiser is to:
A) Hire a weekly home nurse for him
B) Acquire an electric hospital bed. At home, he often has to sleep upright in his chair because he cannot get into bed
C) Ensure he has ongoing access to diabetic friendly food. Even with food stamps, he struggles with food insecurity.
D) Acquire a working furnace for the upcoming Michigan winter
He will need much more than what he’s asking. A furnace will cost between 3k-10k. Monthly hired care for 12 months will be 4k at the extremely low end. Once he returns home from rehab, he will require a fully motorized hospital bed (1,500 - 6k). Reasonably he will need closer to 20k, but absolutely ANYTHING y’all can spare would be a big help!!!!
Especially after surviving 2 amputations, he needs ongoing professional care. He is currently recovering at a nursing home, but he will likely be discharged by September. Winter is fast approaching. Circulation is a major issue with amputees - it is very important he has a working furnace. He has already suffered one heart attack and is on daily heart medication.
He also desperately needs an electric wheelchair. He currently has a manual one and struggles to work it - diabetes has severely impacted his ability to use his hands. Anything y’all can do to help would be deeply appreciated. He is an absolutely hilarious, kindhearted, and easy going guy. Some of my best childhood memories include him. He’s only 60 years old - he has so much more life to live and deserves a better quality of life.
I am confident with rehab and resources, we can get him to a point where his body can tolerate use of prosthetics. But currently, that is too much strain. This fundraiser is just a starting point in support of his broader recovery. Sometimes it truly takes a village to support a life! I appreciate y’all doing what you can. Please share this fundraiser also, it would help a lot!!
