Hi, my name is Janice Nyabongo and I am raising funds for my husband, Amoti, who recently underwent a Stem Cell Transplant at Memorial Sloane Kettering Cancer Center (NYC) for Multiple Myeloma. Your donations will help us with bills and expenses while he recovers from the treatment and restores his body's immune system over the next year.
In February 2021, my darling husband was in a car accident. It was not serious enough for the air bags to deploy. However, Amoti kept insisting that he was having chest pain. After the emergency room doctors conducted the necessary X-rays and CTs, they discovered that he had fractured his sternum. His Primary Care Physician was very concerned as this should not have happened since the air bags did not deploy and Amoti was wearing his seat belt. After numerous bloods tests and a bone marrow biopsy, it was revealed that he had Multiple Myeloma. This disease is not curable but it is treatable. The Myeloma affected his bones and had caused compression fractures in his spine which reduced his tall stature from 5'11" (when we got married) to his present height of 5'4".
Since April 2021, Amoti underwent four (4) rounds of chemotherapy in Bermuda. In July 2021, we came to New York and had a consultation with a specialist at Memorial Sloane Kettering. The specialist was pleased with the progress of Amoti's treatment and suggested that he be set up for stem cell harvesting in preparation for his Stem Cell Transplant. As long as Amoti's cancer markers remained stable, we could wait until Summer 2022 to do the transplant. This way our son would be out of school, I would have more vacation time to use, and we would have time to put money aside for bills and expenses.
In October 2021, when Amoti had the harvesting done, the doctors noticed that his cancer markers were going back up. They were also unable to collect enough stem cells for the transplant. The specialist spoke to Amoti's oncologist, and they decided that Amoti would have another round of chemotherapy in Bermuda, then return to New York to harvest more stem cells and immediately do the transplant. The stem cell process requires Amoti to be admitted into the hospital's isolation unit for approximately two (2) weeks then isolate at home with weekly doctor follow ups for 3 months. Amoti's immune system will be compromised for 6 months up to a year.
My Prince Charming is a warrior and a survivor. Amoti is a Godly family man, a dedicated teacher, an avid pilot, a great bass player, and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. The day before he was admitted, Amoti surprised our son and took him on his first flying lesson. You can only imagine the joy they both shared that day. He planted this seed and now needs to be here to see it sprout.
Words cannot express our family's gratitude for your generosity. Your donations will help towards getting the house professionally cleaned and disinfected in time for Amoti's return home. In addition, they will help towards bill and expenses. The bible says, 'And this too shall pass'. We live those words one day at a time.
