Amos Poe is our friend and now he needs all of us

Filmmaker Amos Poe was recently diagnosed with a rare, aggressive cancer that has left him too weak to continue working. Following a recent barrage of testing, a treatment plan is finally coming together. His family and friends are hoping for the best while knowing the road to recovery will be a long and grueling one.

The costs of care and testing leading up to treatment have been astronomical, even with insurance. The treatment itself and the aftercare will be nearly insurmountable without all of our help.

Amos is a father and grandfather, a brother and a husband—he’s a movie maker, a screenwriter, a storyteller and an artist. He’s been an integral part of the downtown community since the mid 1970’s where he not only helped shape the Punk scene that was exploding on the Bowery but chronicled that moment in New York City’s history. His legendary films—The Blank Generation, arguably the first Punk film, along with Unmade Beds, The Foreigner and Subway Riders—established his reputation as an avatar of a new, Neo No Wave of filmmaking. His filmography is vast and his later films, Alphabet City and Frogs for Snakes, were spun from his groundbreaking earlier work.

Amos’s love of the French filmmaker Jean Luc Godard and the Nouvelle Vague is evidenced by the sweet irony of Unmade Beds, his homage to Godard’s Breathless. That seminal work along with his love of the Italian Masters of film and Classic Hollywood cinema, kept him inspired and constantly working.

Now, for the moment, Amos needs to pause. He needs to take time and get through this.
