Amira's Transition and Asylum Fund
Donation protected
Hi, help us raise money for our friend Amira to stay in her home and continue her gender-affirming care whilst she applies for asylum!
Amira is unable to return to her home in Egypt due to the country's strict ‘morality’ laws that police use to criminalise LGBT people. Returning to Egypt would pose a significant threat to Amira’s life as state officials and police routinely harass, entrap and arrest queer (and specifically trans people), often leading to further abuses in custody. These laws have seen LGBT people in Egypt sentenced to prison and receive large fines.
Amira would also have no legal protections as Egypt does not have any laws to prevent queer people from being discriminated against in the workplace, in housing or by the medical system. Trans people in Egypt are often neglected by the medical system as they require the permission of religious authorities to undergo gender-affirming surgeries.
Amira has begun the often-long process of applying for asylum in the UK. As part of this process, the Home Office have revoked her right to work, meaning she is unable to receive an income needed to survive. The financial support offered by the UK government will not cover Amiras rent, bills, food or her Hormone Replacement Therapy.
The funds we are hoping to raise would enable our friend to pay for her living expenses while her asylum claim is being processed. This process regularly takes between 6 months and a year, or longer.
These funds would allow Amira stay with her friends and with her community. Your support would also help Amira to continue to pay for her ongoing gender affirming care.
